Boston Public Library Johnson Building opens.

December 11, 1972

Architect: Philip Johnson. The addition to the McKim Building is located at 700 Boylston Street. In a biography by Hillary Lewis and John O’Connor, Johnson subsequently admits, “The original design does look like an armory.” The entrance hall contains the mural Nine Notable Women of Boston, created by Ellen Lanyon for the Workingmen’s Cooperative Bank’s centennial in 1980. The building is renovated by William Rawn Associates in 2016.
